Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge specific decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
