That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we grew up with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they converted a persona of affection into a figure of hate who endorses specifically the brutality that he condemned in the Gospel; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains unsettling through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
