Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a military coup in last fall and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
