Highlighted Choice

The Substance

The filmmaker's bold commentary examines the oppressive nature of women's appearance as well as the dreaded aspects of advancing years. The veteran actress offers a brilliant acting turn as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old film star demoted to presenting a workout series on television. Edged out due to her deceitful superior her manager Harvey, she turns to a secretive and horrifying procedure called "The Substance". The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This classic whodunit thriller features the talented actress in the role of Laura, a skilled journalist who takes a hiatus from covering world issues to embark on a luxury cruise with a terminally ill Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her partner, and other filthy rich individuals. Yet once a mysterious woman goes overboard one night and the entire crew insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Available now, the Netflix platform

Presence

The acclaimed director pushes his film-making abilities through this innovative supernatural story shot entirely from the perspective of the phantom. When a household featuring mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe occupies their fresh home, the filming device – representing the ghost – follows them around. The teen shows signs of conscious of the poltergeist, and it seems guarding her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that may be unexpected. October 11th, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame via this meta comedy caper. He portrays a narcissistic Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who agrees to a $1m payday to attend a festive event at a Mediterranean location for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by the CIA to investigate the alleged criminal, his unique performing skills proves useful. This Saturday, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

The Black Phone

Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror holds up well despite the lack of a sequel. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, several disappearances has made the children on edge. Once Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and imprisoned in a cellar, he fears a fatal end. However, the old telephone mounted nearby continues to ring, with spooky callers providing assistance, and the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. October 11th, late evening, the Film4 channel

This Dramatic Portrait

In the struggle between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for materialism in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top biopic about the fallen TV preacher and her criminal husband. Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals begin monetising the people's religious faith. It's a spectacle of poor styling, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, however Jessica Chastain achieves to show the character in a likable light. October 14th, late night, on Film4

This Espionage Thriller

The current week's additional entry by the same director delivers a spy mystery as precise like the turtlenecks worn by the actor's intelligence officer. He receives a mission with uncovering a double agent within their ranks from a group of five – one of whom is his spouse. Both actors excel of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful mind game of fact versus fiction unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
