Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Party

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with deep backstory, a diverse cast of characters, and a gripping narrative showcasing divine entities, demons, and dark forces growing in power within the urban setting.

Warning: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled

Episode 3 concluded with a major cliffhanger and revealed the initial group of adventurers who will split off from the central cast to begin their independent quest, separate from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table consists of Teor Pridesire (portrayed by Travis), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (the cast member), the cleric (the player), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Given an extensive roster, it was obvious from the start that maintaining everyone at one table would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Overture, weaving together the individual narratives before branching into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Schemers, and Questers.

What Defines the Combat Party

As described by the DM, the warrior group is for players who enjoy a typically action-packed battle-oriented story mode where peaceful solutions are rare.

At first glance, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might seem mismatched, but the actions of the third episode show why these particular heroes are best suited for the combat party.

Reasons to Leave

For one thing, the group understands precisely where to head next after a intense first encounter with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose demise initiated the campaign’s events—exploited The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, breaking into the hidden lair, attacking the character, and taking all the enchanted items to dispose of.

Casimir then cleared his obligations and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, above the city, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each member has a individual motive to depart the urban setting:

  • Thimble, as the companion and best friend, seeks retribution.
  • Kattigan is familiar with Timmony and cautions that it is a hostile location.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having defied his relatives’ demands to execute the fighter and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their reputation as key figures in the powerful family could enable the party access locations they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The fighter vowed a life debt to The savior for his salvation and will now accompany him anywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

In addition, all of them are wanted by the powers that control the city for a range of causes, making lingering locally dangerous:

  • Thimble and The character are known criminals.
  • The warrior and Wicander betrayed the influential house and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is marked for death by the clan.

This leaves them few options but to head to Timmony in quest for the traitor.

What’s Next?

Based on the recent installment’s follow-up content, we learn that the Soldiers table won’t be around next week, leaving the rest of the cast members to round up the Seekers and Schemers groups.

Fans can look forward to discovering which characters will be assigned to which table in the story’s concluding setup installment, streaming live on next week.
