Congress Greenlights Bill to Release Jeffrey Epstein Records

The upper chamber of Congress on Tuesday quickly approved to a measure that will force the release of investigative files associated with the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after a overwhelming vote in the US House of Representatives and a shift by the president and his Republican allies. The administration relented after months of trying to forestall the cross-party initiative involving a scandal that has dogged the president since his comeback to the White House.

Swift Passage in Both Chambers

The Senate acted by consensus, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, expediting the process. Just before, the House voted decisively for the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

Citizens have been patient long enough. Those affected have waited patiently,” Chuck Schumer stated in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before urging the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Reveal the truth. Allow openness to prevail.”

Presidential Signature

The bill next goes to Donald Trump for his approval. He signaled on the previous day that he would approve the bill.

Although the president has for months downplayed the controversy over the government’s handling of the scandal as a “Democrat hoax”, he voiced approval for the legislation over the past few days, and stated he would sign the measure if it reaches his desk.

Reaction

Opposition lawmakers, along with victims and their advocates who were seated in a House gallery, applauded after the bill was approved. Lone dissent came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he was concerned the measure would disclose specific data of individuals involved, those under scrutiny and others caught up in the investigation.
